Behind the pattern: Renaissance
The Renaissance Collection was first designed in 2009, though it has a rich and storied history spanning back to the late 18th century. Below we review the shapes and patterns that inspired this contemporary take on archival inspiration.
CAMEO APPEARANCE
The hero of the Renaissance Grey Collection is the iconic cameo form, the distinctive oval shape that is present throughout this fine bone china tableware collection. Our relationship with the cameo shape dates back to 1785, when Matthew Boulton designed Jasperware scent bottles for Wedgwood.
Cameos have existed since the Roman period, usually made from glass. They most typically depicted profile portraits of important figures or scenes from classical history. The most famous example of Roman cameo glass is the Portland, which our founder Josiah Wedgwood memorably replicated in Jasperware.
FLORENTINE ACCENTS
Florentine was first created in 1931. Characterised by an ornate border, it is an intricately detailed pattern featuring a procession of mystical creatures and fantastical flora.
The distinct Florentine pattern features on accent plates in the Renaissance collection, creating a beautiful focal point on your tabletop and a unique opportunity to layer complementary styles.
A POTENT PALETTE
The Renaissance Collection has a range of contemporary colourways. The pattern lends itself to seamless curation on the tabletop, the three colours effortlessly complementing each other.
