Black Panther Vase

Recreated in rich black jasper, the Panther Vase features striking handles that rise from its shoulders and form panther heads, the big cat one of several animals associated with Bacchus. The inspiration for this contemporary reproduction is a neoclassical engine-turned Black Basalt vase dating to c.1770.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Those powerfully modelled handles rising from the shoulders of the piece gave the Panther Vase its memorable moniker. The handles terminate in bacchanalian masks in the form of panther heads. The panther was one of several animals associated with Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and ‘inspired madness’. Dolphins and cats are also said to be among his ‘familiar’s.

PIONEERING CRAFTSMANSHIP

Josiah Wedgwood introduced engine turning into the ceramic industry in 1763. This technique allows Wedgwood craftspeople to skilfully create a fluting on the lower part of the Panther Vase. Interestingly, the engine-turning lathe currently in use at Barlaston has changed little from the original, reflecting a commitment to exquisite, time-tested craftmanship.
