Introducing the first collaborator at Wedgwood under our new vision. Establishing a Creative Hub for Artists of trailblazers, innovators and industry disrupters to freely express themselves through Wedgwood. Our Creative Director, Alice Bastin, invited Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY to recontextualise Wedgwood’s iconic Jasperware.
Dressed in sleek LOVERBOY suits and donning edgy, black modish hairstyles, the band arrived at the Wedgwood factory. The mission: to disrupt and infuse Wedgwood with a post-punk jingle, symbolising the dawn of a radical change.
Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY decorated pre-loved Jasperware pieces with paint splash and hand drawn techniques, creating a limited-edition collection of one-of-a-kind works of art.
Known for his subversive, culturally diverse and gender inclusive creative narrative, Charles was given an open brief to reimagine our most iconic material, Jasperware, through multimedia techniques.
Glazed in the joyful colour palette of LOVERBOY, once decorated each piece was refired in the kiln to make the unique glaze markings permanent.
Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY showcased a collection of decorative suits of armour at Milan Fashion Week 2023 that were intricately constructed from pre-loved Jasperware. These showpieces tapped into Josiah Wedgwood’s legacy as a politically active patron of the arts, a prelude to future LOVERBOY x Wedgwood capsule collections.
These pre-loved Jasperware pieces are all hand-decorated by Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY using a combination of original illustrations and paint splash techniques, meaning no two pieces are alike.
Throughout the centuries our skilled community of craftspeople have retained the techniques that Josiah founded in the 1700s, and have passed on these skills through generations. It’s this community of artisans who remain the beating heart of our brand today.
Creating a very personal narrative and visual expression of our new direction and artistic aesthetic, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY applied his bold, expressive and unapologetic creative handwriting to this unexpected collaboration.
“Upcycling pre-loved Wedgwood Jasperware became a medium for us to breathe new life into these cherished pieces, adding a unique touch and vibrant, expressive energy.” – Charles Jeffrey, Creative Director, LOVERBOY
Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY decorated 493 Wedgwood baubles by hand, producing a kaleidoscopic reimagined work of art. Glazed in the joyful colour palette of LOVERBOY, each bauble was then refired in a kiln to make the coloured glaze permanent. With each item being hand-painted, no two pieces are alike, meaning each bauble is a one-of-a-kind work of art.
