Jasperware is Josiah Wedgwood’s most important contribution to the ceramic arts and one of the foundations of our signature blue hue. With its timeless style and intrinsic class, it has become an enduring material beloved by collectors the world over for more than 250 years.
Below we wanted to take the opportunity to answer a few of the most pressing questions we receive about taking care of Jasperware.
What is Jasper and what is it made of? Open
Developed by late 1774, Wedgwood Jasperware is a dense white stoneware which accepts colouration throughout the entire body. Jasperware was the direct result of more than 5,000 carefully recorded experiments undertaken over a period of several years.
Many consider Jasper to be the epitome of Wedgwood’s career, reflecting his innovation, creativity and determination. As such we are proudly still producing Jasperware today at our home factory in Barlaston, England.
How do you clean Wedgwood Jasperware? Open
Many ask how to care for Jasperware, and whether you can wash Jasperware, given that it is a high-fired stoneware.
We offer the following advice:
- Before cleaning, we recommend you examine the design to ensure that it has not been glued or repaired, or that any of the bas-relief ornaments have 'lifted', as this would affect cleaning.
- If all good to proceed, wash pieces with warm soapy water, using either a soft nail brush or toothbrush for areas that may be very dirty or stained (such as the white ornamentation)
- Rinse the items with clean warm water and leave to dry naturally in the air.
Sudden changes of temperature may cause cracking or breakage. It is vital you never use Jasperware in a microwave oven, conventional oven or refrigerator.
