Behind the pattern: Wild Strawberry
Quintessentially English and unmistakably Wedgwood, our world-renowned Wild Strawberry Collection has captured the imagination since it was first introduced in 1965.
A blend of playful plant forms and rich natural colours, Wild Strawberry is a design that never goes out of style.
Here we take a journey back into the storied Wedgwood archive to outline the history and inspiration behind this signature pattern.
FRUITFUL BEGINNINGS
Strawberries have appeared on a number of Wedgwood ware items over the years and feature heavily in our pattern books. The first representation of a strawberry motif dates all the way back to the mid-1770s, that is, the early years of Wedgwood. It was during this time a strawberry and leaf motif were hand-enamelled direct onto a Queen’s Ware body to create one of the first strawberry patterns.
Moving into the 1800s, the strawberry patterns in the illustrated pattern books begin to feature gold detailing, most notably on the strawberry leaves. This would become something of a hallmark in future designs.
BORDER REGIONS
The 1820s saw our strawberry aesthetics migrate into border designs. These showcased strawberries, strawberry leaves and gilded detailing. Those gold lines run all the way to today as an elegant finishing touch to our teapots and teacups.
Wedgwood designers continued to inject their own creativity into the strawberry motif, evolving flamboyant designs featuring larger motifs and various colours. But the strawberry design always came back to patterns grounded in nature, with leaves and tendrils wandering in an organic manner over and around the perimeter of our wares.
INK DIFFERENT
Wedgwood is renowned for taking historical inspiration and giving it a compelling modern twist. The Wild Strawberry Inky Blue Collection follows this philosophy to the letter, offering a fresh take on a classic look through a deep blue shade long associated with English fine bone china.
While preserving all the cherished elements of the original pattern, this new colourway introduced a striking contemporary contrast of blue against the smooth white porcelain base.
