Together the Daisy Egg, Green Square Covered Box and Lilac Pierced Box form a special trio of small objects of outstanding modern beauty which Hitomi has entitled ‘Sansai,’ a Japanese term meaning three colors.

The perfectly formed Daisy Egg in pastel pink is strewn with an abundance of hand-applied white bas relief ceramic daisies. They tumble over one another and almost appear to ‘dance’ or cascade on the surface with some raised above others on their stems. Hitomi modelled this shape on a combination of a ‘Wagashi’ or Japanese confectionary served with tea and a pebble she found on the English coast. She wanted this ornament to be a colorful symbol of Spring and she named it ‘Koharu’ in Japanese meaning small Spring. She chose a size that fits the hand with the daisies seeming ‘cheerful’ to her as they cluster together in such detail that they seem almost real. Each Koharu piece is double cast and two different sizes of daisy are applied in three varying depths to create texture, using four different stalk heights which the daisies are placed onto, creating the illusion of the flowers dancing. Complete with 203 separate, intricate ornament applications by the skilled ornamentors, and only 1 firing, each Koharu piece takes just under 5 hours to produce.

The charming pastel Green Square Covered Box is draped with hand-applied white bas relief Acanthus leaves that are layered across one another in a trail over the box. Hitomi wanted to create a small container, the size and shape of a ‘Wagashi’ or Japanese confectionary served with tea and chose the Acanthus leaf for its fluidity and soft, edible looking form. Some of the leaves are tinged with blue and lilac graduating shades adding to their fresh, natural look reflected in Hitomi’s Japanese title for the work ‘Wakaba’ meaning young leaves. For the Wakaba Box, both blue and lilac clay is added to each acanthus leaf ornament, creating unique graduating shades every time. Eight individual ornament applications are intricately applied taking an hour to produce each Wakaba box.

The delicate Lilac Pierced Box is a smooth, round, pastel lilac keepsake and across its domed lid lies a scattering of hand-applied white bas relief Chrysanthemums, Hitomi’s favorite flower, in different sizes and intricate designs. Some of these flowers have pierced elements in place of their petals allowing light into the box. As with other pieces in the collection, Hitomi was inspired by the form of a ‘Wagashi’ or Japanese confectionary served with tea and the smooth feel of pebbles found on the British coast. Her Japanese name for the piece, ‘Kayuu’ meaning flower playing, flower tour, perfectly describes the immaculate decorative detail. When composing the Kayuu Box, three sizes of chrysanthemum are used, creating a burst of color at the center of the flower that is unique every time. Of the 13 individual ornament applications, seven are pierced by the skilled ornamentors, allowing light to shine through with each Kayuu box taking just under two hours to produce.

The skilled artisans at Barlaston use ancient skills and their years of training to meticulously create the items in the Sansai Set, which is offered in a limited-edition size of 10. Every piece in the collection is hand-crafted at Barlaston as a highly limited-edition collectable item and artifact with an impress bearing Hitomi’s Japanese signature, the Wedgwood stamp and limited-edition number.
