The Portland Vase

JOSIAH WEDGWOOD’S GREATEST TRIUMPH

Decorative

The result of thousands of trials conducted over nearly five years, The Portland Vase is a testament to the tenacity, persistence and experimental nature of our founder. Josiah set out to copy the first-century Barberini Vase using his new invention, Jasper, to demonstrate that contemporary manufacturing techniques and skilled craftsmen could match the pinnacle of Roman antiquities. The resulting vase proved to be such an accurate copy that when the original Barberini Vase was accidentally smashed while on display at the British Museum, it was Josiah’s Jasperware copy that was used to help piece the cameo glass vase back together.

How it's made

At our factory in Barlaston, in the heart of The Potteries, the Jasper clay body of The Portland Vase is hand-thrown on a potter’s wheel, then carefully engine turned to refine the silhouette and remove excess clay. The bas-relief figures and asymmetrical handles are then applied, and the entire piece is fired in the kiln. A special blend of Jasper clay was developed to achieve the blue-black cameo glass effect of the original Barberini vase, resulting in the distinctive matte black finish of the First Edition Portland Vase.
