The use of exotic materials in the home, along with inspirational design, were important characteristics of sophisticated style in the 1920's. Both are captured in Wedgwood's Shagreen range, where the careful use of blocks of tone on tone textured enamel is combined with an intricate geometric quadrant design and platinum banded detail to create a sumptuous pattern, radiating good taste.
Shagreen, although eminently contemporary, is in fact steeped in design history. The Art Deco period saw the use of leather sharkshin, or Shagreen, as a decorative veneer in fashionable interiors of the time. The sharkskin gave a textured surface and then a dye was added to create the desired finish. This classic style is recreated on Wedgwood's signature fine bone china to stunning effect, with plate borders reminiscent of tiny fine pearls.
