Exotic inspiration is brought right up to date with India, taking as its theme sumptuous silk and carpet motifs from the sub-continent. These have been transformed into a delicate pattern with a very English watercolour effect.
Rich and classic, India makes a key statement in minimalist surroundings or strikes a harmonic note in a more colourful setting.
Almost from the day that Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-95) founded his company, echoes from the exotic cultures of far-off lands could be found in many of Wedgwood's finest patterns and decorative objects. In the 18th and 19th centuries, these influences came mainly from Grecian, Roman and Egyptian archaeological treasures - the celebrated Portland Vase is just one example.
