Ulander Powder Ruby

Peony Teacup

  • Date of Introduction: 1927
  • Fine Bone China
  • Gold Banding
  • Hand wash only

This prestigious pattern was introduced by Wedgwood in around 1900 and was used as the White House service of US President Theodore Roosevelt.

The powder finish originated in China, where craftsmen used to blow powdered dye through a silk screen at the bottom of a bamboo tube. By 1912, Wedgwood had found a way of laying a ground of solid colour, then stippling it with a fine-grained sponge to achieve a similar effect, so the rich 'powder' band of colour was added to Ulander. The same painstaking technique is used today.

Wedgwood now produces Ulander principally for traditional afternoon tea. However, this is such a glorious pattern that, mixed with classic white, just a few pieces will add style and elegance to the dinner table.
