The Offering to Peace plaque celebrates the extraordinary way in which Josiah Wedgwood's creations permeated almost every area of eighteenth century life and set the pattern for the future. This plaque or 'tablet' is typical of the type used as decorative inserts in the fireplace surrounds and friezes of rooms of the time decorated in the Adams style.
The design and modelling of this plaque is attributed to John Flaxman. John Flaxman was an outstanding artist and modeller, enormously prolific and without doubt the most complete and consistent artist employed by Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. Flaxman was responsible for many of the most treasured items from the history of Wedgwood - the Dancing Hours figures, the bas-reliefs of the Apotheosis of Homer and Hercules in the garden of the Hesperides to name but three. It is thought likely that it was Flaxman who drew Josiah's attention to the Barberini Vase in Sir William Hamilton's collection. This became known as the Portland Vase, which after much effort, was triumphantly reproduced in Jasper.
As was often the case at the time, the subject matter of the tablet is an assembly of disparate figures. Here there are several votive offering figures in harmony with the general theme accompanied by a group of frolicking cupids.
Produced in the new Saxon blue colour Jasper with raised white ornamentation and presented in a piano black wood frame, the Offering to Peace plaque is a fitting tribute to the key role played by the creation of Jasper in the formative years of the Wedgwood story.
