Hand Painting

The Wedgwood hand painted product is produced by the application of enamel colours with a fine brush. Our artists paint a variety of subjects. The hand painted items for the 250th anniversary collection revolve around floral subjects.

Hand Painting the Botanical Teaset

The Botanical Tea set

Floral patterns on tea wares were as popular 250 years ago as they are now, and this tea set is based on the original designs of that era, with the floral pattern in the style of the French artist Jean Pillement (1728-1808).

Piercing

Piercing is achieved by cutting out areas to be 'pierced' with a sharp tool when the moulded piece has dried to a 'leather' or 'cheese' hardness. It requires a deft and steady hand, which is also necessary for 'weaving' together the strips of clay to construct the Twig Basket and Stand.

The Orange Bowl

The Queen's Ware Orange Bowl is one of the most intricate masterpieces of the potter's art. With the growing popularity of oranges as a delicacy for dessert in the eighteenth century it was natural that Wedgwood should create a suitable piece for displaying the prepared oranges on the table. The elaborate latticework of the bowl makes it a natural centrepiece.
